A Setup Fee is a one-time charge that you can add to your paid payment plans. It's collected from the subscriber at the very beginning of their subscription, along with their first regular payment (whether that's a full one-time payment or the first installment).
When to Use Setup Fees
Setup fees are useful for covering initial costs associated with a new subscriber, such as:
Account activation
Onboarding assistance
Administrative processing
Initial resource allocation
How to Configure a Setup Fee
When creating or editing a Paid Payment Plan:
In the Payment Plan builder, locate the "Setup Fee" section.
-
Enable Setup Fee: Toggle the switch to enable the setup fee.
Note: Setup fees cannot be enabled for "Free" plans.
-
Choose Setup Fee Type:
-
Fixed Amount: Select this to charge a specific, flat monetary amount (e.g., $25.00).
Enter the desired amount in the "Setup Fee Amount" field.
-
Percentage: Select this to charge a percentage of the plan's base price.
Enter the desired percentage (e.g., 10 for 10%) in the "Setup Fee Percentage" field. The system will calculate the actual fee based on the plan's total price.
-
Set Setup Fee Label: Customize the text that subscribers will see for this fee (e.g., "Activation Fee," "Onboarding Charge," "Initial Service Fee"). The default is "Setup Fee."
How Setup Fees Affect Payments
Collected with First Payment: The setup fee is added only to the first payment a subscriber makes for that subscription.
One-Time Payment Plans: The total amount due at signup will be
(Plan Base Price) + (Setup Fee).-
Installment Payment Plans:
The first installment due at signup will be
(Calculated Amount for First Installment) + (Setup Fee). All subsequent installments will not include the setup fee; they will only be for the regular installment amount.
Example (Installment Plan):
Plan Base Price: $120
Payment Option: 3 monthly installments ($40 per installment)
Setup Fee: $15 (fixed)
Payment 1 (at signup): $40 (installment) + $15 (setup fee) = $55
Payment 2: $40 (installment)
Payment 3: $40 (installment)
